...meets at 7 PM on the Fourth Tuesday of each month, January through November [NO meeting in December!], at the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce Building, 2002 Walters Avenue, Northbrook, Illinois (Click Here for Directions). NEXT MEETING DATE: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25 -- 7 PM Tops and Bottoms: Markets in Euphoria and Panic Sandy Harlow will lead our final discussion for challenging year 2008 with an examination of investor sentiment at major market tops and bottoms. Today, investor morale is low, not surprising given that stock indexes were recently 40% below year-beginning values (erasing the prior five years' growth). Bond, real estate and foreign benchmarks have also tanked. No one knows if the low has been seen... or is yet to appear. Though our windshield view to the future is murky, our rear-mirror view of the past is clear. Sandy will suggest that past periods of extreme market weakness and strength can teach us useful lessons about market trends and investor sentiment. During the past 80 years, market PEAKS occurred in August 1929, March 1937, January 1973, August 1987, January 2000, and October 2007. In that same span, market LOWS were registered in October 1929, July 1932, March 1938, December 1974, October 1987, October 2002, and November 2008 (so far). YOUR "Tops & Bottoms" assignment for NOVEMBER... Select ONE market low or market high event from the lists above. Then research investor sentiment at that chosen time. The Internet or your library can provide historical newspaper and magazine articles for your time period, giving insight about contemporaneous investor sentiment. Look for pithy quotes or succinct comments that illustrate what investors were thinking, feeling, doing at the time. It will be helpful to others if you bring a one-page handout sheet with examples of the information you found [20 copies if possible].
In recent months North Shore meeting attendance has been rising... ...because people are happier crying in a group than on their own! Cushy seating in the AAII-North Shore Subgroup investor center is free for the first fifty attendees; after that there's no charge. The Sturgeon General of California has determined that second-hand stock tips may be hazardous to your wealth... but he may soon be unemployed because California is the profligacy capital of the country. Satisfaction with these meetings is not guaranteed... but if you leave nonplussed you'll have company so it's OK. Discussion at North Shore meetings may include disinformation, misinformation or ugly factoids... persons under 18 will not be admitted without a stockholder. Financial experts are astounded by the average investment rewards realized after attending just one North Shore AAII Subgroup meeting.
